The year 2022 has been the year of the Coastal Grandmother. As AD PRO reported earlier this spring, the term has gained traction on TikTok, where hordes of users celebrate interiors and outfits in an airy, traditional-leaning style that feels straight out of a Nancy Meyers movie. Coastal Grandmother homes are filled with slipcover sofas and vintage furniture yet still feel hip. They utilize blue and white tones to make a space look beachfront, even if the home itself is landlocked. And across the board, they are cozy yet sophisticated at once. Below, we’ve chosen four AD-featured homes that serve as the perfect inspiration for aspiring Coastal Grandmothers.
After they moved from New York to Los Angeles in 2019, it took a while for Laure Heriard Dubreuil and Aaron Young to find the sweeping midcentury modern home they now share with their children, Marcel and Marguerite, ages eight and three. The view “sealed the deal,” says Young, explaining how the couple’s three-year search halted on a dark winter night when they first viewed the property, situated on one of the verdant peaks above Beverly Hills, and encountered its magnificent vista. With Los Angeles twinkling below through the glass-walled great room, which now incorporates their dining, living, and lounge areas, they knew they had found the perfect dwelling for their family. “The entire city—from Long Beach to downtown—lights up for us every single night,” adds Young, a California-born artist who emerged in the New York art scene in the early 2000s.
When Brett Masterson first became acquainted with the creative professional next door, he hardly could have imagined that their neighborly friendship would turn into a steadfast creative collaboration. “She was looking for someone to design her new one-bedroom nest, after having traded in her two-bedroom apartment in the same co-op,” says the architect, who helms Brooklyn-based Masterson Architecture & Interiors. As a recently divorced mother of a seven-year-old girl, and as someone who had lived in Brooklyn for over 17 years, the homeowner knew her priorities. “I was keen on carving out two separate bedrooms so that my daughter and I would each have our own space. Also, because I was starting a new chapter in my life, I wanted the space to very much feel like a reflection of me, my interests, and my personal style,” she shares.
Andy Cohen will be moving soon, but the Bravo host is staying in New York City’s West Village. As reported by the New York Post, the television producer signed a contract for a duplex penthouse perched atop one of the neighborhood’s tallest buildings, a 17-story pre-war Emery Roth classic structure. Asking price was $18.3 million.

With the bucolic charm of rural life and the stylish comforts of 21st century living, the modern farmhouse really does offer the best of both worlds. Pitched roofs, exposed beams, and the enthusiastic use of natural materials may be the charming hallmarks of a classic farmhouse, but these interiors truly sing when combined with contemporary elements. Below, we share eight homes, published by AD, that flawlessly exemplify this principle. From an envy-inducing East Hampton retreat to Jared Padalecki’s family-infused Texas abode, these homes show just how chic the countryside can be.
