In response to the continued earthquakes in South Carolina, scientists are working to "figure it out" by deploying portable seismometers to collect more data, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquakes.
Earthquakes have continued in the Midlands since Wednesday, June 29.
The South Carolina Emergency Management Division has reported three more earthquakes in Elgin and Lugoff SC as of Thursday morning.
- A magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported at 7:03 p.m. east of Elgin on Wednesday.
- Nearly 20 minutes later, another earthquake, 1.46 magnitude was reported at 7:22 p.m. Wednesday.
- South-south west of Lugoff had a magnitude 1.79 earthquake.
- Early Thursday morning, a magnitude 2.33 earthquake was reported at 12:23 a.m. south-southwest of Lugoff
- A 2.03 magnitude earthquake was reported east-southeast of Elgin early Thursday morning.
- Another earthquake was reported Thursday morning at 10:15 p.m. with a 2.15 magnitude.
Currently, DHEC-permitted mine sites in the area are surface pits and the majority are 30 feet or less in depth, SCDHEC said to address questions and concerns about the earthquakes being caused by mines.
Officials say their shallowness would not be expected to contribute to seismic activity.
