Police serve at local Applebee’s raise more than 4K for Special Olympics

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Law Enforcement officers will served as “celebrity waiters” collecting tips of more than $4,500 for Special Olympics Massachusetts.

Law Enforcement Officers from West Springfield, Chicopee, Springfield, AIC, Hampden County Sheriff’s Department and Westfield State University volunteered to be waiters at a local Applebee’s to raise money for Special Olympics Massachusetts on June 23 and 30. This is known as the Tip-A-Cop Fundraiser that was held at Westfield Applebee’s and West Springfield Longhorn Steakhouse Restaurant.

Regular tips to their servers was not impacted but the money donated towards tips for the waitstaff of first responders have gone to Special Olympics Massachusetts. Local Special Olympics athletes greeted customers at the door.

According to the West Springfield Police Department, the money raised will help offset the costs of year-round sports and equipment.

Over 14,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities across the state participate in over 450 year-round training and competitions each year.
