Parents of 2-year-old found unresponsive in Munhall home charged
Seven weeks after a toddler was found unresponsive in a Munhall home, the boy’s parents have been charged in his death.
Robert Kraft died May 13 at UPMC Children’s Hospital. The two-year-old died as a result of a fentanyl overdose, according to Allegheny County police. The medical examiner has ruled his death a homicide.
Emergency crews responded to a residence in the 1400 block of Margaret Street around 1:24 a.m., on May 12. Police said detectives observed that the home was in deplorable conditions with multiple safety hazards, including drug paraphernalia.
Police said arrest warrants have been obtained for 39-year-old James Kraft and 28-year-old Paige Hufnagel. The two are charged with criminal homicide, endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment.
Leazia Colbert lives right next door to the home on Margaret Street in Munhall, where the toddler was found unresponsive last month. She said her family has been devastated. Her younger brothers who aren't much older than Kraft, set up a memorial outside the home.
She is relieved the parents are being held accountable.
Colbert said, "Them finally being charged is definitely a relief for us and it's going to bring justice for the little boy because we were really close with him. He was a sweet kid. It was pretty sad."
The parents were taken into custody on Thursday.
