Paul Imhoff, Upper Arlington Schools superintendent since January 2013, has announced he will step down in January 2023.

According to a release from the district, Imhoff will become director of governmental relations for the Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA).

In January 2013, Imhoff stepped down as superintendent of Mariemont City Schools near Cincinnati to take over at Upper Arlington. He is a graduate of Watkins Memorial High School.

“We have amazing students, the most dedicated and talented teachers and an incredibly supportive community,” Imhoff said in the release. “Our own children are both UAHS graduates, and our family will always be Golden Bears.”

Imhoff was at the helm in November 2017 when the district successfully passed a 3.75-mill operating levy for day-to-day expenses, as well as a 5.17-mill bond, the latter of which was designed to generate $230 million and enabled the district to rebuild and renovate its high school and five elementary school buildings.

He also was the grand marshal of the Upper Arlington Civic Association's 2019 July 4 parade and was named 2018 Superintendent of the Year by the BASA.

“The board of education congratulates Paul on his next chapter," board President Lori Trent said in the release. "We are so grateful for his visionary leadership during the past 10 years and wish him the very best as he retires."

Trent said the board met in executive session June 29 to discuss the district's next steps.

“We are committed to setting up a thorough and comprehensive search process and looking forward to prioritizing community engagement and feedback from parents and guardians, students, staff and the school district community as a whole," she said. "I have already directed Treasurer Andrew Geistfeld to initiate the process to request proposals from search firms to assist us in our search for our next superintendent.”

According to the release, the district is establishing a section on its website, uaschools.org, to document the search process and share updates.

“We want to hear from as many stakeholders as possible as we create the profile of a successful candidate and move forward in this process together,” Trent said.

Board member Nancy Drees said in the release that Imhoff's leadership has been "an incredibly important period" for the district.

“There have been so many great strides forward for our students and our community, and it has all happened during a time of significant enrollment growth, too,” Drees said.
