26-year-old Austin Patrick Hall was confirmed to be in custody around 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning after a manhunt began the afternoon before. He is now being held in the Shelby County Jail and is facing capital murder charges.
During a news conference Thursday afternoon, Bibb County Sheriff Jody Wade identified two deputies who were shot as Deputy Brad Johnson and Investigator Chris Poole.
Sheriff Wade said Deputy Poole was released from the hospital and is recovering, but Deputy Johnson remained hospitalized and "goes through the final processes to continue to save lives.”
Johnson was pronounced dead at 3:18 p.m., according to District Attorney Michael Jackson.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said Hall was located and taken into custody by the United States Marshals Service (USMS) Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force near the 1200 Block of Bulldog Ben Road in Brierfield. He was later transported to the Shelby County Jail.
The charge currently listed for Hall include Attempted Murder/Assaulting Police Officer. He is being held without bond.
Centreville Mayor Mike Oakley said Hall walked into the yard of a relative who called authorities to report his whereabouts.
The deputies were shot on Highway 25 in the Brierfield area during the pursuit of a stolen vehicle.
Parts of I-65 North were temporarily closed to allow one of the deputies to be rushed to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
As of Thursday morning, one of the deputies is in critical condition, and the other was released from the hospital, according to Attorney General Steve Marshall.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency issued a Blue Alert for Hall just after 7:00 p.m. He was described as a "serious threat to the public."
Several checkpoints were set up on roads in and out of the area as authorities searched vehicles.
At least 16 different local law enforcement agencies participated in the search for Hall, including the FBI.
