If your plans for the Fourth of July 2022 include a trip to the beach, you will pay less for gas than you are paying in central Pa.
While AAA and GasBuddy both said this will be the most expensive Independence Day ever as far as gas prices go, coastal areas are showing prices in the range of $4.86 to $4.37 a gallon.
Pennsylvania has the highest gas tax in the nation at 58.6 cents a gallon.
In Pennsylvania today, the average price is $4.93 a gallon. In the Harrisburg area, the average price is $4.89. The national average is $4.85, according to AAA.
The coastal beach area with the lowest gas prices today is South Carolina where gas in Myrtle Beach is less than $4.50 a gallon.

- North Carolina $4.50
- South Carolina $4.37
We checked prices according to AAA in some popular beach areas. Here is what we found:
- Long Island, New York $4.86
- Ocean City, Maryland $4.74
- Atlantic City, New Jersey $4.84
- Wildwood, New Jersey (Cape May County) $4.90
- Rehoboth Beach, Delaware (Sussex County) $4.76
- Virginia Beach, Virginia $4.73
- Myrtle Beach, South Carolina $4.36
- Outer Banks, North Carolina $4.71
After hitting record highs in mid-June of more than $5 a gallon, gas prices have been trending lower for the latter part of the month.
Yesterday, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said on Twitter that national average gas prices were falling 10 cents to 20 cents. “.. the national average heading lower for a third straight week… still no rush to fill up… prices will keep falling!”
