The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office is investigating after several miniature horses died after their owners say they were poisoned. It happened this past weekend at the Sprinkle Family Farm off Maple Creek Road. One of the owners says three of her mini horses were killed and one donkey is still fighting for her life.

A public hearing is set for three health systems that have submitted applications to fill the need for 67-acute care beds in Western North Carolina. AdventHealth says if it gets approval, it will build a new hospital in Enka Center off Smokey Park Highway. Mission Health will add beds to its main campus. The third applicant, Novant Health, says its hospital would be built in Biltmore Park.

Thursday morning, several local agencies will be on I-40 to pay tribute to a fallen Virginia firefighter. Veteran firefighter Alicia Monahan died Saturday in a catastrophic accident while teaching a swift water rescue course in the Nantahala River in Macon County. Travelers should expect to see vehicles posted on bridges on I-40 from exits 37 to 66. The procession will leave from Bryson City at around 9 a.m.
