In a field, knowing how crops are progressing and being able to identify an insect can mean the difference between a profitable harvest and a bad year. The University of Illinois Extension is hosting the second annual Illinois Crop Scouting Competition on August 4th at the Crop Sciences Research and Education Center in Savoy that will challenge teams of high school students from across the state, explains Commercial Agriculture Educator Dr. Chelsea Harbach:
“This is a really, really cool opportunity for kids. It is an early advanced, hands-on testing and learning your crop scouting skills as well as an opportunity for them to engage with university educators and professors. It is a team event. Teams compete and can win prizes and then the top two teams from the state, get to go on and represent Illinois at the regional competition in Indiana this year.”
Registration can be completed online at http://go.illinois.edu/cropscouting.
