A weekly perspective on sports

Casey Krautkramer Reporter The Record-Review

I decided this week to grab both the 1970 Record Review and The Stratford Journal from our newspaper office archives to see what interesting things I could find in the sports sections.

Granton High School doesn’t have good varsity basketball teams anymore, due to the school’s declining enrollment. It does look like either Granton had a good varsity boys basketball team in 1970 or Athens had a bad squad.

The Jan. 22, 1970 Record Review, which only covered Athens and Edgar back then, has a story about Granton’s varsity boys basketball team defeating Athens, 69-23. Larry Guralski paced Athens with 14 points. Mark Beyer added 12 points for the Jays while nabbing 14 rebounds. The Bulldogs wouldn’t have a shot to beat today’s Bluejays.

Athens did of course have a stout varsity wrestling program in the 1970s. The Feb. 5, 1970 Record Review has a story about Athens wrestlers trouncing Pittsville, 35-11. Dan Mauer, Ray Chojnowski and Henry Harder added 15 points to the team in the final three matches by pinning their opponents.

There is a varsity basketball story in the same week’s Record Review with the headline titled, “Marathon’s Red Raiders Ride Crest.” I have never written a headline like this one. The story reads the Marathon Red Raiders varsity boys basketball team used a big first quarter to beat Edgar last Friday by a score of 84-59. Steve Seubert led the victors by scoring 27 points. Bill Wilson led Edgar’s scoring with 23 points on nine baskets and five free throws.

I discovered a short story with a picture in the Feb. 19, 1970 Record Review about Edgar wrestlers setting a record. The story states on Feb. 14 the Edgar wrestling team placed second out of a field of 11 schools participating in the WIAA regional wrestling tournament held in Schofield. For the first time, Edgar had three boys who won berths to the sectional tournament which was held in Mosinee on Feb. 20-21. The three winners were Steve Burger at 98 pounds, Wally Nowak at 165 and Tony Liss at 175.

It was time I turned to The Stratford Journal. A story on Jan. 22, 1970 states the Stratford varsity boys basketball team beat Pittsville, 64-63, in overtime. The story says there were many heroes Friday night, but senior Jerry Nowack had to be the biggest. His clutch basket as the buzzer sounded enabled the Tigers to tie the game and send it into overtime.

The Feb. 5, 1970, edition of The Stratford Journal states the Stratford varsity wrestlers downed non-conference foe, Stevens Point Pacelli, last Thursday night 29-17. Tigers winning their matches are Ted Weis, Darrell Rausch, Dennis Weis, Rich Kaiser, Mike Weigel, Lyle Aschebrook and Lowell Gebelein.

I will continue enjoying the archives.
