SEATTLE - Starting this Friday, July 1, firearm magazines with more than 10 rounds will be banned.
As a result, gun stores around the region have seen record sales
Wade’s Eastside Guns in Bellevue said he has seen sales jump 250 percent since last month. Some people are buying guns. But most everyone is buying firearm magazines. Many customers it’s because of the new state law that’s about to kick in.
“I did my best to get 30 round magazines, 60 round magazines, 50 round drum magazines,” said Pedro Santos. He’s one of many people we’ve seen at local gun stores stocking up on firearm magazines.
“A lot of people want to buy these magazines as rapidly as we can," said Santos.
Washington State will ban firearm magazines with more than rounds of ammunition beginning Friday.
In Tacoma at Mary’s Pistols, the store owner says eight out of 10 people come in asking about firearm magazines for pistols or AR-15s.
“This is a 10-round magazine versus the one that is being banned, the 30- round magazine,” said gun store employee Rebecca Huckins. “You can pick these both up today, but after tomorrow, it’s only these that we can allow to go out.”
Back to Wade’s Eastside Guns in Bellevue, sales are through the roof.
“For the month of June, we’re up about 250% over April and May,” said Owner Wade Gaughran. “We bought 400 Glock mags last Thursday and sold them out in three days.”
The record sales raise some big questions about the ban.
Alan Gottlieb is with the Second Amendment Foundation.
“We sold over ten years supply in the past month of magazines that hold over 10 rounds. People say ‘OK, you’re not going to let me buy it in the future? I’m going to buy it now and put it away’.”
As for the new law that takes effect on Friday, Washington will become the 10th state in the U.S. to restrict the sale of magazines with more than ten rounds.
