Murfreesboro officials pleased Redeemer Classical Academy mother Erin Woodrum by allowing the private school to move into a temporary building.

"It's a hidden gem," Woodrum said recently after the Murfreesboro Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special use permit for the K-12 private school temporary building plan.

The interdenominational private Christian school will be moving to the city's far west side in an 8,190-square-foot modular building on the grounds of Fellowship Bible Church at 4236 Veterans Parkway, about a third of a mile south of Franklin Road.

'If kids aren't safe, they don't learn':School resource officer staffing remains top priority

The school started after getting BZA approval in 2013 to operate temporarily at Bethel Community Church at 1503 Sulphur Springs Road on the northwest side of the city.

The new temporary location also will be located by the Jack Byrnes Drive intersection with Veterans, the church is near Murfreesboro's Overall Creek Elementary.

The temporary building on the south side of the church campus will serve about 100 people for two years until Redeemer can build a permanent school, said Matt Taylor, a civil engineer and vice president with Murfreesboro-based SEC (Site Engineering Consultants).

Erin Woodrum and her rising third-grade son, Seth, pose June 22, 2022, after the Murfreesboro Board of Zoning appeals approved a special use permit for Redeemer Classical Academy to use a temporary modular building to serve the private school's K-12 students for two years at Fellowship Bible Church, 4236 Veterans Parkway.

Redeemer acquired land on Old Salem Road off Veterans Parkway on the southwest side of the Murfreesboro area for a permanent school and hopes to move there by July 31, 2024.

Woodrum: 'They're getting individualized attention'

Children and adults were present audience members June 22 when the BZA approved the permit for the school's temporary building plan. They wore gray shirts with the Redeemer Classical Academy logo, an R in a green shield-shaped pattern.

Among the group were Woodrum and her rising third-grade son, Seth.

A teacher for English as a Second Language students at Rutherford County's David Youree Elementary in Smyrna, Woodrum appreciates the small class sizes for her children at Redeemer. Her son, for example, was one of three second-graders this past year.

"They're getting individualized attention," said Woodrum, adding the students will start learning Latin next year along with continuation of instruction in art, music and other subjects. "We're trying to help more people be aware of Redeemer. It's a real asset for our community. We're happy to be there."
