Iowa Fraud Fighters is calling on you to combat scammers in the state.
Cybercrimes are up, so Iowa's Insurance Division was out teaching folks in Tama Wednesday how to protect themselves and report fraudsters.
IID says there's a lot of schemes out there targeting everything from your love life, your identity, and investments, as well as grandparent scams and Medicaid fraud.
Retired Marion School Teacher Martha Jo Ennis lost everything -- her retirement, money from the sale of her family farm, all told over a million dollars -- to a Ponzi scheme.
IID says there's no shame in being fooled; anyone can fall victim, which it's so important to remain vigilant.
"One of the main things that we explain while we're here is to double check," Iowa Attorney General's Office Investigator Al Perales said. "And to double check before you sign on a dotted line, or before you say yes over the phone, or give vital information over the phone, or click on that link."
AARP estimates that Americans over 50 years old lost almost $3 billion last year to cybercrimes, up 62% from the year before.
