SUPERIOR, WI. (KBJR) -- Some volunteer firefighters in Wisconsin received a gift Wednesday that could save lives.

The Acacia-Itasca Masonic Lodge of Superior presented three local fire departments with fire suppression units.

The kits went to departments in the towns of Superior, Oakland, and Gordon.

The lodge held fundraisers, including a Palm Sunday pancake breakfast to help purchase the units, which cost about $1,000 each.

The suppression units allow firefighters to start putting out flames before entering a burning building.

“There are two pins that you pull and you just throw the unit in and within 10 seconds, it cuts off all the oxygen. It brings the temperature of the fire inside down by as much as 1000 degrees,” said Ron Pete, Secretary of the Acacia-Itasca Lodge, and Chairman of the Town of Superior.

Also on Wednesday, the Superior Masonic Lodge presented a similar unit to the Lake Nebagamon Volunteer Fire Department.

The units have a shelf life of about 15 years.
