Smith was shot to death in Grundy Center last April. His funeral was held at the high school.
The statue is expected to cost $150,000. The district has approved $50,000 from the one-cent sales tax. They are relying on private donations to cover the rest of the cost.
Earlier in 2022, Smith’s family set up a $2,700 annual scholarship. High school students interested in law enforcement can apply at RememberingJimSmith462.com.
