HALIFAX, Va. (WFXR) — A black bear was spotted roaming the streets of Halifax, according to police.

The Halifax Police Department says multiple sightings of the bear were reported on Wednesday, June 29, specifically in the area of Houston Street and Snead Lane.

Police stated earlier that they are aware of the bear, and would like to thank all of the citizens who called and reported sightings.

In a Facebook post, the department said that bears are drawn to garbage and food. By removing any food and trash left outside, your property should be free of bears. There have been reports of bears going after bird feeders, so removing those may help if bears keep visiting your property.

If you see a bear, do not confront it. Slowly walk away if you are approached or come in close contact and call 911 for any emergencies.

The Halifax Police Department is asking residents to please notify them of any future bear sightings.
