The Page Community Garden is growing strong despite this year’s windy and dry weather.

The garden – a partnership between the City of Page, Banner Page Hospital and local gardeners – is located off Tunnel Road across from Page Animal Shelter.     

A chain link fence installed by the city encloses a large area, where local gardeners have been working the sand, making soil and growing a variety of plants.

Treated water from the nearby wastewater treatment facility is pumped to a water hydrant in the garden. From there, gardeners have designed their own system to deliver water to the plants.  

According to City Council member and garden organizer Brian Carey, the treated water is nearly clean enough to drink and is perfectly suitable to irrigate a garden.

The water and the land are provided at no cost to gardeners. Instead of rules, there are suggested behaviors, such as respecting each other’s garden space, working together and learning from each other.  

Carey said the garden is a sort of experiment where gardeners see what grows well. Participants are currently growing corn, watermelon and other veggies.

Three gardeners are participating in the Community Garden so far this year, and there’s room for more.
