CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A Charlevoix County jury found a Kalkaska man guilty of larceny for stealing from Toys for Tots, according to Charlevoix County Prosecuting Attorney Allen Telgenhof.
Vincent Michael Ryan, 38, was found guilty after a one-day trial in the 33rd Circuit Court on Wednesday.
Telgenhof says he played security camera footage at a gas station from November 2021, showing a man taking a Toys for Tots collection box from the store, taking the box down the aisle out of cameras view, and eventually throwing the empty box away near the rear of the store.
Several witnesses, including gas station employees, were able to positively identify Ryan as the person who stole the collection box when questioned by police, Telgenhof stated.
“This was a case of a store having great video footage of the incident and wisely putting the information out on social media and getting help with identification,” Telgenhof said. “The Charlevoix City Police also put the information out to other departments. Using all of the camera angles, the jury was able to see exactly what had happened.”
Ryan has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2006, including misdemeanor convictions for receiving and concealing stolen property and embezzlement, Telgenhof said.
Ryan also has felony convictions, including possession of methamphetamine, absconding on bond and a prior larceny in a building, Telgenhof said.
Ryan is scheduled to be sentenced on August 12.
"Larceny in a building is a felony that typically carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison," Telgenhof stated. "Because Ryan is a habitual offender, fourth offense, the maximum penalty in this case is fifteen years."
