Travelers from Burlington only have to wait 30 more days to take a direct route to New York City by train.
Wednesday marked the final countdown to the end of a transportation project that has cost about $110M.
The Ethan Allen Amtrak train will leave the Burlington station around 10:10 a.m. every morning and head toward New York City. Along the way, it’ll stop in Vergennes and Middlebury before picking up its normal route in Rutland.
People in the surrounding communities are very excited for what’s to come.
“It brings an accessibility to NYC that we haven’t had before in a different way,” says Karen Duguay, executive director of the Better Middlebury Partnership.
In October of 2021, Maggie Keith and Anthony Gerakos opened Little Seed Coffee Roasters, a Café downtown that has seen college students throughout the school year and tourists over the summer.
“Once we heard there was going to be a stop in Middlebury we were really excited for people from other cities to be able to travel without worrying about their car,” says co-owner Maggie Keith.
Amtrak will soon be making two stops daily in Middlebury, just a seven-minute walk from downtown.
Business owners see an opportunity for people to come and see what Middlebury has to offer — particularly after the hardships brought by the pandemic and years of construction work.
“We need these visitors back,” Duguay said.
Downtown Middlebury was under construction for 4 years, making advancements to its underground rail tunnel for Amtrak. It was all a part of the $110 million project. The Agency of Transportation is excited to provide more options for travelers.
The ride to NYC from Burlington will take around seven and a half hours.
“A lot of people say, you can drive it in less, perhaps you could if there is no traffic or no accidents, if you’re just a visitor to NYC you have to ask yourself, where do I put my car?” says Joe Flynn, secretary of the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
Tickets from Burlington to NYC will cost $75 when purchased in advance.
Ticket prices are expected to go up the closer to departure they’re booked.
