Town of Otis geared up for 4th of July

Otis’ biggest event of the year is just days away, and there’s plenty on the books for Independence Day.

The day gets going Monday at 8 a.m. with breakfast at the concessions, served by the baseball program.

Find your partner for the annual Thunder on the Plains doubles volleyball tournament, played on the Otis baseball field.  Registration begins at 8 a.m. and play gets underway at 8:30 a.m.  Teams will be split into two divisions – juniors (14 and under) and seniors (15 and older).  All proceeds go toward the Otis summer baseball program.  For questions or to register a team, call Alli Hornung at (970) 466-1756.

After that, head over to ambulance building at 9 a.m. to start bidding on silent auction items.  Stick around the ambulance building for a game of Bingo, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

New this year is a first responders parade down Main Street.  Find your spot to show your appreciation to those in the parade, which gets going at 9:30 a.m.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., mosey back on over to the ball field to test your throwing accuracy at the Otis FBLA dunk tank.  Lunch will be sold from the baseball concessions stand, starting at 12:30 p.m., served by the Otis summer baseball league.

All of the kids should head over to the Otis City Park at 1:30 p.m. for some games, followed by a water fight for the youth at 2:30 p.m.

Back at the Otis Fire Hall, kids’ bike parade will kick-off at 3 p.m., which is the same time as the Otis Volunteer Fire Department’s pie eating contest.  The Otis Telegraph will once again sponsor the penny dig at 3:15 p.m. at the ballfield playground.  Silent auction bidding will close at 4 p.m.

Per tradition, the Otis Volunteer Fire Department will serve up their famous Rocky Mountain Oyster and chicken strip dinner, starting at 5 p.m. in the fire hall.

After a day packed full of fun, grab your chairs and blankets to unwind before the fireworks display caps off the evening at dusk.
