High school coaching legend, Tom Meyer, has added one more notch on the belt.
Last Tuesday, July 21, Meyer was one of 41 individuals inducted into the 2022 National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame Class in Altoona (Des Moines), Iowa.
Coach Meyer concluded his 40-year career as track coach at Akron High School in 2019. He also served 22 years as basketball coach and 22 years as the athletic director.
He is a member of the CHSCA Hall of Fame and has been a National Finalist for Track Coach of the Year. He has earned numerous accolades over the course of his career, including eight State Girls’ Track Championships, 10 State Girls’ Track Runner-up finishes and one State Boys’ Basketball Championship.
In addition to leading teams to countless league, district and regional titles, Coach Meyer has been honored on nearly every level. Some of his honors include Rocky Mountain News/Denver Post Boys’ Basketball 2A Coach of the Year, 1989; CHSCA Girls’ Track Coach of the Year, 1997; Rocky Mountain News All-Colorado Girls’ Track Coach of the Year, 1997; H.S. Southwest Sectional Track Coach of the Year, 2002, 2007, 2008; NHSACA Finalist for National Coach of the Year, 2007; NFHS National Girls’ Track Coach of the Year, 2008; CHSCA Hall of Fame Inductee, 2010; Warren Mitchell Track Award, 2011; CHSCA Dale Yost Teacher/Coach Award, 2012; and NHSACA Finalist for National Boys’ Track Coach of the Year, 2017.
Over his 40 years at Akron High School, Coach Meyer has mentored hundreds of students on the basketball court and track, including multiple generations. Past athletes have flooded social media with their memories and gratitude toward Coach Meyer upon learning of his NHSACA Hall of Fame induction.
Tom Meyer is a high school coaching legend in Colorado. The true measure of his career has been the positive impact he has made on the lives of the student athletes he has taught and coached over his 40-year career at Akron.
