The Illinois Attorney General's Office and Illinois State Police on Wednesday announced a new resource for Illinois law enforcement.
The Crime Gun Connect platform allows police to analyze firearms used in a crime and use the data from other agencies to trace the weapon.
Attorney General Kwame Raoul says the system uses more than a decade of data, high tech mapping, and other features to help with investigations involving guns.
"Tracing guns recovered after they are used in a crime can help identify the purchaser, but also co-conspirators and witnesses. On top of the crime gun tracing can provide a better look at trends and patterns of how guns are finding their ways into the hands of people we know will do bad with them,” said Raoul.
Many of the records come from data from the ATF and information shared between more than 200 law enforcement agencies.
