Columbia Daily Tribune

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has identified the four people who were killed Monday when an Amtrak train struck a dump truck and derailed near Mendon, including a pair of sisters from Kansas.

The driver of the truck, Billy Barton II, 53, of Brookfield, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chariton County coroner, the highway patrol said Wednesday.

The other three fatalities were passengers on the train: Rachelle Cook, 57, and Kim Holsapple, 56, both of Desoto, Kansas; and Binh Phan, 82, of Kansas City.

Cook and Holsapple were pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner; Phan was pronounced dead at University of Missouri Hospital.

Approximately 150 people were transported from the scene to 10 area hospitals, authorities said. Amtrak says there were about 275 passengers and 12 crew members on board the train, which was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago and making stops in between.

MU Health Care treated 19 total patients from the derailment and was continuing to care for six of them Wednesday, the hospital system announced at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, adding that two patients had been released since Tuesday night.

Cook and Holsapple were sisters embarking on a getaway trip to Chicago with their mother and one sister's daughter, according to a verified GoFundMe campaign set up by a family member to help cover their funeral expenses.

"They were excited to be on their first trip together in many years," the GoFundMe page says.

The two other family members on the vacation were hospitalized when the train crashed shortly after departing Kansas City, the page says.

Cook, Holsapple and one sister's daughter "headed down to the restrooms, where as they were waiting their turn the train derailed, sliding on its side hundreds of feet trapping many and killing the two moms," James Hart, who started the GoFundMe campaign, wrote in a Facebook post.

Nearly $10,000 of the $15,000 goal had been raised on GoFundMe by 4 p.m. Wednesday, with more than 100 donations made.

"They leave behind many loved ones, including children and grandchildren," the GoFundMe page says of the sisters.
