Formal charges have been filed against the man and woman who led a Homewood police officer on a chase that ended with the officer being seriously injured.

Tryriq McCall, 20, who was wanted on a failure to appear warrant on a murder charge, is now charged with second-degree stolen property ant attempting to elude. He will be held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

Demaria Ayana Hicks, 21, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and attempting to elude. Her bond is set at $500,000.

Homewood police on Wednesday said the injured officer, Jason Kanaday who joined the department in 2010, continues to recover at UAB Hospital and is listed stable condition. Donations to help with Kanaday’s recovery are being accepted through the Homewood Police Foundation.

The chase began about 9:20 a.m. Tuesday when an officer initiated a stop for a traffic violation on a white Hyundai Sonata in the 200 block of Lakeshore Parkway. Hicks was driving the vehicle, and McCall was a passenger, police later learned.

During the traffic stop, the officer discovered that both occupants were wanted for outstanding warrants.

McCall is set to go to trial in August for the 2021 murder of 18-year-old Orlando Keith Williams Jr. A warrant was issued for his arrest after failed to show up for a March court hearing on that case.

Hicks had an outstanding traffic warrant in Tarrant.

As the officer waited for additional units to respond, the vehicle fled from the scene.  A pursuit was initiated and traveled through Birmingham and Hueytown.

As the pursuit continued through Birmingham McCall threw a handgun from the vehicle, said Homewood Sgt. John Carr. The handgun was later recovered by a Homewood police officer.

The suspects’ vehicle got onto I-59 near Jaybird Road and continued to flee west through Bessemer.  As the vehicle approached exit 112 on Interstate 59, it made an abrupt  lane change from the far left lane onto the off ramp.

“This reckless maneuver forced civilian vehicles and Homewood police vehicles to take evasive action and resulted in a Homewood police motorcycle officer, who was operating his motorcycle in a support role, collide with another Homewood police vehicle,’’ Carr said.

The suspect vehicle continued down the exit ramp where McCall exited the vehicle, armed with a handgun and an assault style rifle and fled on foot.  Hicks continued to flee in the vehicle.

Officers from multiple agencies – including Bessemer police, Hueytown police and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies - set a perimeter and began a search for McCall.

McCall was located in the 1700 block of 18th Way North and after, a brief foot pursuit, was taken into custody.  A stolen Glock handgun that was in McCall’s possession as well as the assault style rifle were recovered.

McCall was transported to the Homewood City Jail.

At 12:13 p.m., Homewood detectives located Hicks at a residence in the 700 block of Old Springville Road and she was taken into custody.  She, too, was taken to the Homewood City Jail.

Both will be transported to the Jefferson County Jail later today.

Kanaday was airlifted to UAB Hospital.
