Power to a large section of Jasper was knocked out on Tuesday evening when a pickup truck left the highway and struck a guy wire on an electrical utility pole on the north side of town.

Officers with the Jasper Police Department said the accident occurred shortly before midnight in the 1100 block of North Wheeler Street, when a 1998 GMC Sierra driven by Peyton Ryder Maddox, 18, of Pineland, which was northbound at the time, for some unknown reason, crossed the center line and went off the road.

Jasper City Electrical Superintendent Lee Wellman said the impact of the truck caused the guy wire to flip over the power line, shorting it out.

City electrical crews soon arrived at the scene and immediately went to work making the necessary repairs and about an hour later, power was restored.

Police said no injuries resulted from the incident.
