Oldham celebrates silver ‘spud-versary’
This weekend is the 25th Anniversary of Oldham Potato Days; everyone is invited to come join this long-standing community celebration. For those unfamiliar with this event, Potato Days has been celebrated in Oldham for decades. It stopped for a period, but was then ‘revived’ 25 years ago by Lorraine Huntimer.

Pochop creates lifelong memories through quilts
Oldham community members are gearing up for a Potato Day weekend Aug. 12–14. Various activities start on Friday including a bean bag tournament and karaoke. On Saturday at 1:30, there will be a parade, along with various activities in the park. The museum will also be open from 1-4 p.m. At 10:30 on Sunday, worship in the Park with Pastor Wanda Biel will be held. Bring a lawn chair.

1953: Twenty-one purple ribbons
Kari Austgarden and her son Bjornar from Norway were recent visitors at the Clendening’s. Kari’s grandmother’s brother Peter Hagen immigrated from Norway and settled in the Esmond-Carthage area from 1917-1919. He then moved to Arizona, where he died in 1920. They did a family search and are now in the process of personally visiting areas of the United States where he lived.

50th class reunion celebrated
The Carthage Class of 1972 celebrated their 50th class reunion on Sat., Aug. 6 at Carthage Strawbale Days. The class rode a float in the morning parade and spent the afternoon with friends and families, touring the area attractions. An evening meal was enjoyed at the Cabaret and then a gathering at the Carthage Community Hall, reminiscing and exchanging information. There were 20 members of the class; two are deceased, and three were unable to attend.

Legion recognizes Purple Heart recipients
To commemorate South Dakota’s Purple Heart Recognition Day, De Smet’s American Legion Post 138 hosted a ceremony in the theater of the De Smet Event and Wellness Center on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. A good turnout of local residents came to pay their respects to those from our nation’s military who have earned this medal.

Sheriff Reports
The Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Department reports two accidents. July 27 – Koden Elkins, De Smet, was traveling south on SD Highway 25 near mile marker 121 when a deer came out of the ditch and struck his vehicle. The 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix Elkins was driving sustained $1200.00 in damages.

Raises and increased starting pay approved
The Kingsbury County Commissioners met on Tues., Aug. 2 to discuss several different topics including raises, the cannabis ordinance, man camps and a proposed road levy. Echo Steffensen asked for wage increases for several different county personnel including Deputy Auditor, Deputy Treasurer, Deputy Register of Deeds, 4-H assistant, Deputy of Equalization, Clerk of the Director of Equalization and Clerk of the Treasurer.

Tax incentive plan for development approved
Lake Preston’s City Council met Monday night at City Hall at 7 p.m., right after a special zoning meeting at 6 p.m. that covered costs associated with housing developments and lots, and the revenues expected to result from new housing. Representatives from Headpin, LLC explained details related to the creation of a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district in the city.
