A 29-year-old Alfred man drowned Tuesday evening after diving into a pond on private property in the Town of Alfred.

Amity-based New York State Police said Joseph A. Torkaman dove from a dock into a pond on Randolph Road shortly before 6 p.m. and failed to immediately resurface.

Troopers said Torkaman was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water by other people at the scene.

Emergency medical personnel and a state trooper performed CPR before Torkaman was taken by an Alfred ambulance to Jones Memorial Hospital, police said.
