A Dunkin’ giveaway in Rhode Island sparked controversy on Wednesday.
A Facebook post inviting the public to stop by for free coffee invited only white Cranston residents.
A Dunkin' spokesperson said it was an unfortunate mistake.
"It's an embarrassing mistake,” said Kelsey Chester, a Field Marketing Manager with Dunkin'.
She said the Facebook post was copied from a similar coffee giveaway in White Plains, New York. When the word Plains was replaced with Cranston, the word White was never deleted.
Dozens of people lined up outside the coffee chain looking to get their hands on a year of free java. Regulars at the location said they don't believe there was any malicious intent.
"It's too racially diverse in there. And it's just, that's just not how that's not how things roll,” Shelley Ramsey.
"I would say that's an error for sure. We come here every day. It was here that posted that? that would be definitely an error,” said Arletta Ferreria.
Wednesday’s celebration went on as planned, and the first 100 people who showed up – regardless of their race – got free coffee for a year.
A $1,000 check was also presented to the Rhode Island Special Olympics.
