LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - Twenty-seven beef cattle weighing 950 pounds to more than 1250 pounds are on the run. The herd escaped on Monday from Woodrum Farms near State Route 511, in Oberlin.

The owners of Woodrum Farms tell 19 News they believe their livestock were spooked when a large tree came crashing down in their pasture.

The family of farmers are just exhausted, saying they haven’t slept in two days, and have barely had a bite to eat as they work to round-up the cattle.

Their number one concern is for the safety of the public, in the event that the large animals become spooked again and run into the road.

That’s why the Woodrum family is working with the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, police dispatch and ODNR to try and safely corral the heard.

Delaney Overstreet, who lives near State Route 511, spotted some of the beef cows in a field as she was coming home from work on Wednesday afternoon.

“I just happened to look over and see one cow in the middle of the field, and I kept driving and two minutes down the road there were 7 or 8 more just running down in the middle of the field,” Overstreet said. “They were full size cattle just running. I was kind of surprised because it’s not really something you see every day. I didn’t know if they were supposed to be there or what’s going on, if they got loose.”

The Woodrum family has tried several times to corral the cattle. They are now trying to recruit a group of rodeo professionals to help.

The family also wants to thank the community for their offers of help, but they are asking that people do not try to catch the cattle, instead please call 911.

Because while it may be quite the sight to see a large herd of cattle running or walking down the street, for the Woodrum family remember the livestock are a product of their hard work.

They’re worth tens of thousands of dollars and important to the family’s livelihood.
