A village of Marathon staple may be changing ownership soon.

The Three Bear Inn, a historic hotel, restaurant, and bar located at 3 Broome St. in a structure that has existed for more than 222 years, may soon be sold off, according to owner and operator Sharon Toussaint. The current business has been operating on the property since the 1900s. Toussaint has been the manager for more than 35 years.

Richard Brooks, the chairman of the village’s planning board said ownership is currently “in the process of working out a potential sale.” Brooks added there have been several attempts for the change in ownership at the inn that have fallen through “for one reason or another.”

“Nothing is definite yet. We haven’t exchanged any money,” Toussaint said. “Right now we are in negotiations and I am not going to comment on rumors of a sale until we have something definitive.”

Toussaint said her retirement is a motivating factor behind a potential sale.

“It is because of 51 years serving the public, 36 of them at the Three Bear Inn,” Toussaint said. “I deserve a break.”

At a recent Village Board of Trustees meeting, it was noted there could be a potential Three Bear Inn’s sale to a childcare provider. In regards to that potential scenario, Brooks said a childcare facility in that area would have to check in with New York State Department of Transportation regulators, who can be strict about speed regulations as well as safety measures.

Further details surrounding the sale of Three Bear Inn remain to be seen.
