Gov. Reynolds speaks on abortion at stop in Belmond
KCCI caught up with Gov. Kim Reynolds on Wednesday in Belmond. The governor was at a scheduled appearance at Belmond Community Hospital where reporters were allowed to ask questions.
Watch the video above to hear Reynolds' first public comments since the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Reynolds said she has no plans to call a special legislative session. She is asking Iowa Supreme Court to rehear Planned Parenthood v. Reynolds.
The governor is also asking the district court to lift an injunction on the fetal heartbeat bill.
"This is the route we need to take," Reynolds said. "We have two laws in place. We're going to move forward with that, we'll see what the ruling is based on that and then we'll reassess after that point."
KCCI also caught up with Democratic governor candidate Deidre Dejear during a stop in Winterset.
"I'm pro-choice and pro-choice is about a woman being able to walk into her doctor's appointment, meet with her doctor and make the decision that is within the best interest of her," Dejear said.
Reynolds said there's no need to call a special legislative session at this time.
She will ask the Iowa Supreme Court to rehear the Planned Parenthood case by Friday.
Her request to lift the injunction on the fetal heartbeat bill might not be filed by then, but she wants to act quickly on it.
Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller will not represent the state in the fetal heartbeat bill.
Reynolds is using outside legal counsel in that lawsuit.
