KCCI’S SCOTT CARPENTER, WHO SPOKE WITH GOVERNOR REYNOLDS AND HER DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGER. SCOTT: DURING A STOP TODAY IN BELMOND, GOVERNOR REYNOLDS SPOKE PUBLICLY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE SUPREME COURT’S RULING OVERTURNING ROE VERSUS WADE. SHE FURTHER EXPLAINED HER STRATEGY TO STOP ABORTIONS IN IOWA. >> WE ARE GOING TO TAKE A DUAL PATH. SCOTT: TWO ROUTES OF ACTION WHEN IT COMES TO ABORTION IN IOWA. THAT INCLUDES ASKING THE IOWA COURTS TO LIFT THE INJUCTION ON THE FETAL HEARTBEAT BILL, WHICH WOULD BAN ABORTIONS AFTER SIX WEEKS. RIGHT NOW ABORTIONS ARE BANNED , AFTER 20 WEEKS. SHE IS ALSO ASKING THE STATE SUPREME COURT TO RE-HEAR PLANNED PARENTHOOD VERSUS REYNOLDS. IN THAT CASE PLANNED PARENTHOOD , CHALLENGED THE IOWA STATUTE THAT ABORTION PROVIDERS COULD NOT USE FEDERAL MONEY FOR EDUCATION. THE EDUCATION WAS DESIGNED TO PREVENT TEEN PREGNANCIES AND REDUCE SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS. >> THIS IS THE ROUTE WE NEED TO TAKE. WE HAVE TWO LAWS IN PLACE. WE’RE GOING TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT. WE’LL SEE WHAT THE RULING IS BASED ON THAT AND THEN WE’LL REASSES AFTER THAT. SCOTT: WE ALSO CAUGHT UP WITH DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR DEIDRE DEJEAR DURING A STOP IN WINTERSET. >> NOW OUR SUPREME COURT IS , PUTTING ANOTHER HEALTHCARE CHOICE IN THE HANDS OF OUR STATE. I DON’T THINK THAT’S WHERE IT BELONGS BECAUSE IT’S ABOUT OUR FREEDOM. SCOTT: SHE SAYS THE SUPREME COURT’S RULING MAKES THE RACE FOR IOWA GOVERNOR EVEN MORE IMPORTANT. >> I AM PRO-CHOICE. PRO CHOICE IS ABOUT A WOMAN BEING ABLE TO WALK INTO HER DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENT MEET WITH , HER DOCTOR AND MAKE THE DECISOIN THAT IS WITHIN THE BEST INTEREST OF HER. SCOTT: GOVERNOR REYNOLDS SAYS THERE’S NO NEED TO CALL A SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION AT THIS TIME. SHE WILL ASK THE IOWA SUPREME COURT TO REHEAR THE PLANNNED PARENTHOOD CASE BY FRIDAY. HER REQUEST TO LIFT THE INJUCTION ON THE FETAL HEARTBEAT BILL MIGHT NOT BE FILED BY THEN- , BUT SHE WANTS TO ACT QUICKLY ON IT. KCCI caught up with Gov. Kim Reynolds on Wednesday in Belmond. The governor was at a scheduled appearance at Belmond Community Hospital where reporters were allowed to ask questions.Watch the video above to hear Reynolds' first public comments since the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade.Reynolds said she has no plans to call a special legislative session. She is asking Iowa Supreme Court to rehear Planned Parenthood v. Reynolds.The governor is also asking the district court to lift an injunction on the fetal heartbeat bill."This is the route we need to take," Reynolds said. "We have two laws in place. We're going to move forward with that, we'll see what the ruling is based on that and then we'll reassess after that point."KCCI also caught up with Democratic governor candidate Deidre Dejear during a stop in Winterset."I'm pro-choice and pro-choice is about a woman being able to walk into her doctor's appointment, meet with her doctor and make the decision that is within the best interest of her," Dejear said.Reynolds said there's no need to call a special legislative session at this time.She will ask the Iowa Supreme Court to rehear the Planned Parenthood case by Friday.
