Spencer, IA (KICD) — The biggest concern administrators in the Spencer School District addressed at their meeting on Tuesday was the new rule for open enrollment removing the deadline.

With no deadline students would be able to change schools at any time in the year, creating potential for budgeting issues. The district’s budget is done at the beginning of the year so if a student changes schools during the school year funding to the school would “follow the students”, shorting the budget for Spencer.

Administrators were concerned with the possibility of knee-jerk decisions by students or parents to change schools on a whim creating these difficulties for the district.

Superintendent Terry Hemann said that the district is still waiting for more information from the Department of Education about implementing funds from the recently announced $100 million security fund for Iowa schools, but they already have safety training planned.

The Board of Directors also approved staffing suggestions from Activities Director Taylor Chapman to hire staff to help with new and growing programs.
