Penn State Basketball: Nittany Lions Reportedly Set to Host Butler

Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry will reportedly face a former employer this season as part of the 2022 Gavitt Games as the Nittany Lions are set to host Butler, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

The Gavitt Games are an annual meeting of various Big Ten and Big East schools. Penn State last played in the event in 2019, when it defeated Georgetown 81-66. Dates and times for the Gavitt Games have yet to be announced but are expected to take place in the early portion of the regular season.

Shrewsberry was an assistant coach at Butler from 2008-2011 helping guide Butler to the national title game in 2010 alongside head coach Brad Stevens. The duo would eventually end up coaching together in the NBA as part of the Boston Celtics organization – Stevens the head coach before stepping into an executive role in 2021. Shrewsberry would eventually return to Purdue – an old stomping ground of his – before taking the Penn State job ahead of last season.

Penn State is 1-2 all time against Butler having faced the Bulldogs last in 1992 at Rec Hall, winning 67-64. Butler is now coached by former Ohio State coach Thad Matta.

The Nittany Lions’ out of conference schedule has yet to be released, although the Nittany Lions will travel to face Clemson as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
