Evacuation orders remained in effect Wednesday morning for the Rice’s Fire, burning along the Yuba River northwest of Grass Valley.

The fire began Tuesday afternoon; by 7 a.m. Wednesday it had burned 769 acres, with no containment. It was first reported as a vegetation fire, and early updates from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said at least one building was “fully involved.”

Temperatures in the area Tuesday reached 100 degrees, with relative humidity as low as 6 percent. Slight cooling is forecast for Wednesday: highs in the low 90s, daytime humidity around 10 percent.

The Zonehaven map above shows areas of mandatory evacuation in red and evacuation warnings in yellow.

A temporary evacuation point was set up at the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City, and animals were being accepted at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, the sheriff’s department said.

The evacuation area overlaps with that of the Jones Fire, which burned for 11 days in August 2020 and destroyed 21 buildings.

Also on Tuesday evening, the 200-acre Camino Fire was threatening 50 structures in the hills east of Pismo Beach, Cal Fire said. No evacuations had been ordered.
