Active COVID-19 cases topped 2,000 again Wednesday in West Virginia after declining for two straight days.

The active total now sits at 2,014 after the addition of 667 new positive cases Wednesday, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. The total increased by 21 from the previous day.

The cumulative positive test rate inched up Wednesday from 8.16% to 8.17% while the daily positive test rate came in at 9.48%.

Two new COVID-19-related deaths were also reported, pushing the state’s total during the pandemic to 7,059. The deaths were a 99-year-old man from Wood County and an 83-year-old woman from Nicholas County.

Hospitalizations due to the virus decreased by one to 216, including 29 people in intensive care (up one) and four people on ventilators (down one).

There were 26 counties in yellow in the DHHR’s latest county alert map, down two from the previous day. The yellow counties were: Kanawha, Putnam, Boone, Logan, Mingo, Wyoming, McDowell, Mercer, Roane, Calhoun, Clay, Braxton, Nicholas, Greenbrier, Upshur, Ritchie, Wood, Tyler, Marion, Monongalia, Ohio, Hancock, Tucker, Grant, Morgan and Jefferson.
