A scene from the 2001 animated film "Shrek" plays at the Ciné Drive-In in Athens, Ga. on May 14, 2022. The nonprofit theater's summer movie series will include family fare.

After its inaugural 2021 season proved a success with sold-out shows and a Halloween horror series, the Athens Ciné Drive-In returned this spring with a screening of the original 1977 "Star Wars" on May 15.

Uncooperative weather resulted in the cancellation of a planned showing of "Terminator 2," so the nonprofit theater's outdoor venue took June off to regroup. On Saturday, the big screen will light up once more with a perfectly-timed screening of 1996's "Independence Day."

The drive-in program is expected to take place each Saturday throughout the summer with "Raiders of the Lost Ark" on July 9, "Grease" on July 16, "Finding Nemo" on July 23 and "Aliens" on July 30.

Weather permitting, the late summer lineup will continue with the original 2001 "Shrek" on Aug. 6, "Con Air" on Aug. 13, "Lord of the Rings" on Aug. 20 and "Labyrinth" on Aug. 27. Should any of the shows get cancelled due to weather, the movies will be rescheduled.

The Ciné Drive-In will once again be located at 100 Newton Bridge Road in the General Time Athens parking lot. Tickets must be purchased in advance on the Ciné website, and concessions such as popcorn and candy will be available at the drive-in along with beer and wine selections.
