Maya Hawke treated NBC like HBO Tuesday (June 28) night when she stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and brought a whole slew of swears with her. The Stranger Things star got heated during a conversation with Jimmy Fallon about the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, including her own personal connection to the ruling.

Hawke said she had called her mom, Uma Thurman, before appearing on The Tonight Show to ask for advice, and their conversation turned to Roe v. Wade, specifically an essay Thurman published in The Washington Post in September 2021 about the importance of abortion rights.

“My mom wrote this really beautiful essay about her abortion that she got when she was really young and about how if she hadn’t have had it, she wouldn’t have become the person that she’s become, and I wouldn’t exist, and how both of my parents’ lives would have been totally derailed if she hadn’t had access to safe and legal healthcare,” Hawke, whose dad is Ethan Hawke, told Fallon.

“Of course, wealthy people will always be able to get abortions. But so many people, because of this ruling this week, will not only not be able to pursue their dreams, but actually lose their lives and be unsafe,” she said, before pausing and telling the late night host, “I just wanted to say that like, you know, fuck the Supreme Court,” while putting her hand over her mouth.

The audience erupted into cheers as Fallon encouraged her, telling Hawke, “You can absolutely say that.”

She added, “We’re going to keep fighting this,” before turning to Fallon and asking, “I can say, fuck the Supreme Court?” When he nodded and told her, “Yeah, absolutely,” she repeated, “Oh, fuck the Supreme Court. Yeah, rock on.”

Hawke ended her message on a positive note, facing the camera directly and promising, “We’re going to keep fighting it, and we’re going to win like our grandmothers did.”

The Tonight Show airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on NBC. Watch Hawke’s full interview with Fallon in the video above.
