INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Firefighters worked throughout the night at a Oslo Road convenience store after a fire from an unknown source started inside and spread into its ceiling causing what fire officials said was ‘significant damage’ and leading to a law enforcement investigation.

The fire was reported inside the Cumberland Farms convenience store and gas station on the northeast corner of Oslo Road and 27th Avenue Southwest just before 8 p.m. Tuesday, said Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief David Kiernan.

No injuries were reported, and two employees were the only people in the store at the time, he said.

Convenience store goods are scattered outside Cumberland Farms located at 880 27th Ave SW in Vero Beach, Wednesday, June 29, 2022. Indian River County Fire Rescue crews worked late into Tuesday night after a fire caused significant damage to the interior of the store.

“One employee noticed the fire on the left side of the second aisle, (but) didn’t see anybody come in or out of the store,” said Kiernan.

When crews arrived, he said the fire had grown into what he said was a 2-foot "working fire" that had moved to the right of the main entrance and from there into the attic area.

He said there was “significant damage” inside the store from flames and smoke and that the location would likely be closed for the “foreseeable future.”

Several businesses across Indian River County have been partially damaged or totally destroyed by fires in recent months.

A portion of a cabinetry business called The Cabinetree Collection, in the 800 block of 35th Court Southwest, was destroyed by fire just after midnight on June 25.

Both law enforcement detectives and fire investigators planned an investigation into the June 29, 2022 fire at a Oslo Road Cumberland Farms that caused significant interior damage and the closure of the convenience store.
