DAVONTE: BREAKING OVERNIGHT. WE’RE GETTING NEW DETAILS FROM WINSTON-SALEM POLICE. AFTER A GUN WAS FIRED INSIDE THE TARGET STORE ON HANES MALL BOULEVARD. OFFICERS SAY THE GUNFIRE STARTED FROM AN ASSAULT. A MAN TOLD POLICE HE WAS APPROACHED BY THREE MEN, WHO STARTED ATTACKING HIM. HE THEN FIRED A GUN TO TRY AND STOP THE ATTACK. THE SUSPECTS CONTINUED TO ASSAULT HIM, TOOK THE GUN, AND ALL 3 RAN OFF. A WITNESS SAYS THE SCENE WAS TERRIFYING. >> IT WAS QUIET. I REALLY DIDN’T HEAR ANYTHING UNTIL THE LOUD BANG. MY DAUGHTER AND I JUST LOOKED AT EACH OTHER AND THAT’S WHEN I KINDA HEAR SKUFFLING. IT WAS REALLY EERIE AND EVERYONE RUNNING AS FAST AS THEY CAN. DAVONTE: WE’RE TOLD THE VICTIM HAS MINOR INJURIES. OFFICERS ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE SUSPECTS. THEY’RE DESCRIBED AS THREE MEN IN THEIR 20’S WHO TOOK OFF IN A WHITE MID-SIZE OR HATCHBACK STYLE CAR. POSSIBLY WITH AN OHIO LICENSE PLAT

Police say evidence suggests this is not a random act of violence.

A man fired a shot inside a North Carolina Target store while he said he was being assaulted by three men, Winston-Salem police said. Police were called to the store at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on Hanes Mall Boulevard for a report of a shot fired. Officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department and deputies with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the store and cleared the interior of the store for possible shooting victims. Police said they found evidence inside the store that indicated "a struggle had occurred in the back of the store" and damage consistent with a gun being fired. During the investigation, a 25-year-old arrived at the hospital with injuries to his head and face. Police say the victim reported being inside Target when he was approached by three men that began assaulting him.Video below: Woman who was at Target talks The victim told police as he was being hit multiple times by the suspects in the face and head, he fired one shot from his gun to stop the suspects from assaulting him.According to police, the victim said the suspects continued to assault him and physically took his gun from him before they left the store.The victim told police he left Target and drove home before going to a local hospital to be examined."The suspects were last seen running out the front door of Target and getting into a small white four-door mid-size or hatchback-style vehicle with a possible Ohio license plate," a news release said.The victim’s injuries were considered minor and he was released from the hospital. Police say evidence suggests this is not a random act of violence.
