Fireworks already blamed for several field fires in Grand Island
Authorities have been warning for weeks that conditions are dry
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Fireworks are now permitted in many Nebraska communities, and they’re already causing problems in one city.
The Grand Island Fire Department says crews battled several field fires Tuesday, the first day fireworks were allowed.
Communities to the north and west of Grand Island will be under a red flag warning Wednesday, meaning any fires that ignite are going to be especially difficult to control.
Strong wind will help the flames spread fast in these conditions.
Grand Island authorities say anyone who chooses to set off fireworks should avoid grass fields.
Areas under a red flag warning like Arapahoe, McCook, Loup City and Broken Bow will want to skip fireworks entirely.
Earlier this month, Elwood canceled its Fourth of July show, saying conditions were too dangerous.
