Police believe a 16-year-old boy was impaired when he crashed his car, became airborne and killed a 17-year-old from Myrtle Beach.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said they responded to the crash involving a 2022 Dodge Challenger on Sunday in Brunswick County.
Troopers said the car was traveling at a very high rate of speed when it left the road to the right, struck an embankment, became airborne and rolled over several times. While the car was rolling, three teenagers in the backseat who were not wearing a seatbelt were ejected.
The driver and front-seat passenger were able to exit the car with severe but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital, troopers said. Two of the ejected passengers were also taken to the hospital with severe injuries.
Troopers added the 17-year-old girl was ejected and passed away on scene. Her identity has not been released.
Community members confirmed she went to Socastee High School.
Charges are pending for the 16-year-old.
