Fireworks safety encouraged

For those who plan to light fireworks, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue reminds residents that the use of fireworks inside the city limits is prohibited. The only exceptions are sparklers, snakes and other fireworks that don't have an audible sound, projectile or launching component.

Here are some safety tips offered by the fire department for those using fireworks:

  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • While legal in town, sparklers can be dangerous as they can reach 1,200 degrees and can easily cause burns.
  • Use only firework purchased from a licensed retailer. Homemade or altered fireworks are both illegal and dangerous.
  • Follow all warnings and instructions.
  • Check weather conditions prior to lighting fireworks.
  • Make sure people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
  • Light fireworks only on smooth, flat surfaces and away from the house and flammable materials like dry leaves.
  • Never try to relight "dud" fireworks.
  • Have water, sand or a fire extinguisher handy in case there's a fire.
  • Extinguish fireworks before disposing of them in the trash.
  • If someone is burned, cool the burn with lots of cool water and seek medical attention.
