Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 29

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 29, the 180th day of the year — 185 days remain in 2022. On this day 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote, ruled the death penalty was unconstitutional. Four years later, it reinstated capital punishment under different guidelines.

Here & Now

• The new operator of what was once Salvation Cafe has changed the color scheme and name of the Broadway establishment, but he’s kept the predecessor’s tropical vibe.

“Salvation Cafe was an institution around here,” said Callum McLaughlin, co-owner of the new restaurant, Cabana. “We’re trying to maintain that spirit.”

McLaughlin came to Newport via New York City, but he's no stranger to the area. Reporter Savana Dunning recently caught up with him and got a look at the new place ahead of its grand opening today. Read her story here

Trivia answer

Q: A 6-foot-3 guard for the Boston Celtics, this one-time NBA player became co-owner of a Newport bar associated not with basketball, but baseball. What is his name?

A: Kevin Stacom, and the bar was Mudville Pub. Soooooo, it seems more than a few of you are familiar with Mr. Stacom, who played seven seasons in the NBA.

The Suns' Ricky Sobers, and the Celtics' Kevin Stacom mix it up during the 1976 NBA Finals.
