On Sunday, June 5, members of the Southside Lions Club hosted a tree dedication ceremony at Ivy Agee Park in Gordonsville for the families of two deceased club members.
When a Lions Club member passes away, the club plants a tree in memory of them and their service to the community. Each tree is accompanied by a stone marker in the ground with the deceased members name and the date the tree was planted engraved on it. The two trees were in memory of Mrs. Martha Geldreich and Mr. James Robert Bass.
The Southside Lions Club has been actively serving the Gordonsville community and surrounding area since 1963. The Southside Lions Club serves in many capacities, such as providing financial assistance to local families that lose their home to a fire or storm, aiding and supporting individuals who need vision and hearing assistance, funding a scholarship each year for a Gordonsville High School senior, and sponsoring the Taylor-Wills Memorial Citizenship Award and the Adam Hearn Academic Achievement Award.
With more than 1.4 million members, Lions Clubs have a powerful voice. And around the world, Lions are using that voice to raise awareness about climate change and mobilize. In 2011, then International President Wing-Kun Tam challenged Lions to plant one million trees. They responded by planting 15 million in every inhabited continent and have continued to plant millions more since.
