Prest River’s “Run for the Berries” attracted quality runners this year in the five- and one-mile runs. Ninety-seven runners charged out from the starting line for a quick-paced race. The lead runner finished the first mile in 5:20.

30 Years Ago — 1992

Police hunt suspects

Police are still looking for suspects Monday after the Sugar Plum was burglarized sometime Thursday night or Friday morning and valuable jewelry was stolen.

40 Years Ago — 1982

Logs going to C. d. A.

Logs are rolling out of Diamond International’s Albeni Falls mill on their way to Coeur d’ Alene, but company officials claim this should not be taken as a sign that the plant will remain closed in the future. Tim Olson, Diamond’s industrial relations manager, explained that the company has been looking at different ways to operate Albeni at less cost than by keeping it closed.

50 Years Ago — 1972

From log drive history

Two of the best remembered men on the drives were Paul LaMotte and Henry Lund, both deceased. LaMotte, who had his first log drive experience in the east, was the stern boatman at past 70 Years of age. Lund, also nearing 70 when the drives were discontinued, totaled more than 50 years of drives beginning in Norway, and came to the Priest River country in 1913. LaMotte brought down a drive in 1911 for the Bissol Pole Company. Once a man spent a season on the drive, it was in his blood and seldom did he miss a drive thereafter.

60 Years Ago — 1962

Diamond National on strike

More than 900 men have been made idle by a strike at Diamond National Corporation units at Albeni Falls, Superior, Mont., and Coeur d’ Alene.

70 Years Ago — 1952

Mayors to log- roll

Bill Nieland, chairman of the Bonners Ferry board of trustees, has accepted a challenge from Laurence Nelson, mayor of Priest River, for a log rolling contest to be held as part of the log roleo to be presented at the Ellersick mill pond on Friday, July 4, as part of the two-day Fourth of July celebration.

80 Years Ago — 1942

Game warden to the rescue

The aid of the game warden has been asked to take care of the beaver which have the hay meadows on the Jim Mickelson, Roger Hagman, and George Guptill places so badly flooded as to make having difficult.

90 Years Ago — 1932

Highway work to start

The resurfacing of the highway between Priest River and Sandpoint will soon be underway, the contact having been let to the Western Construction Company of Pocatello, Idaho. The contract does for resurfacing approximately 21 miles of road at a cost of around $46,000. It does not include oiling, to follow later.

100 Years Ago — 1922

Store offerings

Following are the prices being paid for butter and eggs at Priest River stores this week: Ranch Butter, 30 cents a pound; Ranch Eggs, 25 cents a dozen. E. P. Mears, “The House of Quality,” advertises wool bathing suits, just arrived; and Paul L. Mears posts a slogan for the country folks, “Tie the old gray mare back of Paul’s store.”
