Former James Madison men’s golf standout Jack Floydd earned qualification to the 150th Open Championship on Tuesday afternoon, rolling in a 15-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to earn the final spot in the field.

The 2022 Open Championship, one of professional golf’s four majors and scheduled for July 14-17, 2022, will be held at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland, considered the oldest and most historic golf course in the world.

After advancing to today’s Final Qualifying round, held at Prince’s Golf Club, Floydd carded consecutive rounds of 71 (-1) on the 36-hole qualifying day, earning a tie for fourth among 64 players competing for four berths to The Open Championship.

As part of a five-way playoff for the final spot, Floydd put his second shot on the par-4 10th hole to 15 feet and holed the only birdie among the five players to punch his ticket.

Floydd will be the first-ever JMU alumnus to compete in The Open Championship and the first to compete in a major since Faber Jameson (’98) played in the 2011 PGA Championship.
