For the first time in many years, the annual Fourth of July Parade will have a parade marshal. Audrey Westfall was asked by members of the Weston Volunteer Fire Department if she would like to serve as parade marshal, and she eagerly agreed, but wants to be escorted by her sister, London.
Earlier this year, Audrey was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and she and her sister have both had their worlds turned upside down.
“We tossed around the idea in the past of having a parade marshal and could never decide, but this year it just seemed right to give Audrey and London the opportunity,” WVFD Chief Jimmy Suttle said.
Audrey and London’s mother, Megan Moody Westfall, said they both were thrilled when asked.
“They are super excited,” she said.
Audrey will be entering the fifth grade at St. Patrick School in the fall, and London will be going into second. They like to go hiking, camping, boating, and shopping, and Audrey also likes hunting with her dad, Chad Westfall.
The girls have big plans for when they grow up, too. Audrey wants to be an engineer, and London wants to be a hairstylist or teacher. For now, though, they each have their favorite things about school.
“Audrey likes science the most, and London likes lunch,” Westfall stated.
Audrey was first diagnosed April 1. She had not been feeling sick prior to then, but was feeling pale and short of breath just a few days before.
“It came very suddenly,” Westfall said.
It was surreal when the diagnosis came, and they are still processing, she continued.
“We’re in survival mode,” Westfall added.
As for London, Westfall said she is adjusting well.
It is rather fitting the Fourth is the holiday Audrey and London get to be marshals, as it is Audrey’s favorite holiday.
“The Fourth of July because we get to go on the boat and Aunt Amber and her cousins come in,” Audrey said.
London, however, has another favorite holiday:
“Christmas!” she said.
Independence Day events in Weston begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 2, with the annual parade, followed by coronation of the Flame Queen at the Town Hub, a street fair on Water Street, then fireworks beginning at 10:15 p.m.
