(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Jonathan Jackson, a son of civil-rights icon Jesse Jackson, on Tuesday had pulled ahead in the Democratic primary for Illinois’ 1st Congressional District — the seat being vacated by retiring Congressman Bobby Rush.

The 1st District contest was crowded with nearly 20 candidates who hoped to represent the district covering Chicago’s South Side and south suburbs. Jackson declared victory late Tuesday with 5,338 votes, or 27.4% of ballots counted.

In another U.S. House primary race based in Chicago, state Rep. Delia Ramirez secured the Democratic nomination for the 3rd Congressional District against Chicago alderman Gilbert Villegas. She had 27,250 votes, or 65.8% of the vote, with more than 50% of the ballots counted.

Republican Justin Burau was running unopposed.
