Dax and Samantha McDonald were traveling to visit family for the Fourth of July

FAMILY FOR THE UPCOMING HOLIDAY. THE TRAIN CRASHED TWO STOPS BEFORE THEIR DESTINATION. IT WAS THEIR FIRST TIME ON A TRAIN. DAX AND HIS SISTER WANTED TO AVOID COSTLY AIRFARE AND GASOLINE PRICES, SO THEY BOUGHT TRAIN TICKETS. THEY HAD THE BEST TIME ENJOYING SCENIC VIEWS, UNTIL IN MISSOURI, DAX SAW TWO TRUCKS TOO CLOSE TO THE TRACKS. >> THEY WERE MOVING PRETTY QUICKLY, SO I WAS LIKE, WOW, THAT’S LIKE KIND OF ODD THAT THEY ARE MOVING SO QUICKLY SO CLOSE TO A TRAIN. THEN CAME THE SOUND OF THE IMPACT. THEY FELT THE TRAIN HIT THE SECOND TRUCK. >> WHEN WE FIRST HIT THAT TRUCK, I WAS JUST LIKE, OK, WE HAVE ANOTHER DELAY. WHEN I STARTED NOTICING THE TRAIN TIP OVER, THAT’S WHEN I WENT INTO LIFE OR DEATH. IF FELT LIKE A MOVIE, IT WAS JUST LIKE SO, THIS DOESN’T ACTUALLY HAPPEN. >> THERE’S JUST THIS HORRIFIC, HORRIFIC NOISE AND THEN THIS BANG, AND THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW, YOU’RE ON YOUR SIDE. REPORTER: EVERYONE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRAIN WAS TOSSED AIRBORNE AS THE TRAIN WENT OFF THE TRACKS AND HIT THE GROUND, LANDING ON ITS SIDE. >> YEAH. REPORTER: SHE SHOWS US HER BRUISE. TONIGHT, THEY ARE THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE. >> JUST THANKFUL THAT WE WERE ABLE TO WALK AWAY FROM IT REALLY. JUST THANKFUL FOR THAT. >> ABSOLUTELY TRAUMATIZING. REPORTER: TONIGHT, THEY’RE GRATEFUL TO THE MEDICAL TEAMS AND THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY THAT RESPONDED TO HELP. >> THEY WERE BRINGING FOOD TO THE HIGH SCHOOL. THEY WERE BRINGING FOOD TO THE HOSPITALS THAT EVERYONE HAD GONE TO.

Dax and Samantha McDonald were traveling to visit family for the Fourth of July

Dax McDonald and his sister, Samantha, were traveling from Arizona to Iowa for a visit with family for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. The train crashed two stops before its destination.It was their first time on a train. The siblings said they wanted to avoid costly airfare and gasoline prices, so they bought train tickets.They had the best time enjoying scenic views in Missouri until Dax McDonald said he saw two trucks too close to the tracks."They were moving pretty quickly so I was like, 'Wow, that's like kind of odd that they are moving so quickly so close to a train,'" Dax McDonald said.Then came the sound of the impact. They felt the train hit the second truck."When we first hit that truck, I was just like, 'OK, we have another delay.' When I started noticing the train tip over, that's when I went into like life or death. It felt like a movie. It was just like so, 'This doesn't actually happen,'" Dax McDonald said."There's just this horrific, horrific noise and then this bang and the next thing you know you're on your side," said Samantha McDonald.Everyone on the left side of the train was tossed airborne as the train went off the tracks and hit the ground landing on its side.The brother and sister said they are grateful to be alive."Just thankful that we were able to walk away from it really. Just thankful for that," Dax McDonald said."Absolutely traumatizing," Samantha McDonald said.Both said they appreciate the medical teams and the people in the community who responded to help."They were bringing food to the high school. They were bringing food to the hospitals that everyone had gone to. It was outstanding," Samantha McDonald said.The McDonalds said it's been hard for them, but they're glad to now be with family in Iowa for the Fourth of July. They said it's possible they never take the train again.
