The College of the Redwoods announced a new wrestling program for men and women coming in the fall of 2023. The program will begin recruitment of a coaching staff this fall before conditioning new students in the off-season before spring of 2023.
The men's program is expected to start competing in the fall of 2023 and the women's program will begin its season in the spring of 2024.
CR Athletics Director Bob Brown said he is excited about the new programs.
"It will be the first time for a women’s program and the revival of the men’s program after a more than 40-year absence from competition," Brown said in a press release.
CR President Keith Flamer shared in the excitement and wanted to encourage students to pursue their athletic dreams while studying at the community college.
“I believe that starting a women’s and men’s wrestling program at CR in 2023-24 is the next exciting part of our commitment to women’s athletics and providing a place where local men and women high school athletes can continue competing while earning a college degree," Falmer said in a statement.
The programs will compete in the California Community College Athletic Association and will be sponsored in the Big 8 athletic conference.
